Joel Marion -Photographer

My experience with photography started when I was in the Air Force, when I bought my first camera, a medium format all manual, which I still have. I taught myself about f stops and shutter speeds and their relationship to one another and the outcome of the many variables they present. As the years went by, I devoured everything photographic that I could. When I left the Air Force I went to work for one of the biggest studios in St. Louis and after a couple of years I ventured off on my own and have been on my own ever since.

In 1985, I was doing Advertising & Fashion photography and Carol, the art director for JCP hired me to do fashion shoots for newspaper advertising. I have to admit I was smitten by her but at the same time I knew she was a client and I had to refrain from expressing my feelings. The greatest news came one day when she told me that JCP was moving it's advertising offices to out of state and that she was leaving JCP and going over to Dillards. That was when I asked her out and she has been the love of my life for the past 25 years. We've been married 21 years now and she left Dillard's to manage our business in 1999.

Carol and I share lots of things, bike rides, long walks, Hallmark movies and every once in awhile a visit to Carl's Drive In. We have 5 children, 3 son-in-laws, and 3 granddaughters.

I am a creative photographer that is always looking for a unique and individualistic way to create images that evoke an emotional response in the viewer... in other words, creating true artistry. That is, the ability to create for the client, images that stand out from the rest, images that go beyond the typical.

I believe that wedding photography should be approached as an art form. Since the advent of digital photography, most major markets are now saturated with wedding photographers, making it more difficult for the discerning couple to select a competent photographer for what is likely one of the most important days in their lives. When viewing the galleries of the many photographers out there, look for images that spark an emotional response, images that say something to you. If they do, you have found your photographer.

Carol Marion - Studio Manager

After receiving a Bachelors degree in Art with emphasis in Graphics from Webster University, I set out to work in the arts while raising 3 daughters. I found myself in retail advertising for 15 years, first as an Art Director for JCP, and then at Dillards as a Print Production Manager. In the mean time Joel and I married in 1991.

While on a family vacation in 1999 doing one of our favorite things, walking on the beach, we decided it was time for me to join the business as the Studio Manager.

I handle all the phone calls, appointments, scheduling, ordering of prints and albums, and also oversee the album designs. I also assist Joel at many portrait sessions during the week and week-ends to provide that attention to detail that means so much to so many.

As a co-owner of our own business I put all my efforts into every detail I can to satisfy our customers. I appreciate the art of photography and also the art of telling everyones' individual and unique stories through photography.

Kelly Tucker - Design Specialist

Keeping up with the family tradition, I have worked for Joel Marion Photography off and on since attending Ursuline Academy. Once graduating from high school I went to Fontbonne University in pursuit of a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in drawing.

Knowing that I always wanted to eventually work for the family business full time, I used that time to really understand art through the eye of a figure. In college, my strengths were always composition, lighting of the figure, and an up close interpretation of form. In 2006, I finally joined the Joel Marion Photography team full time. At that point I took all the years of fine art instruction and took that into the Photoshop world. I am our retouch artist and designer of all of your images and albums.

Soon after, I became interested in actual shooting and began training under Joel. I bring a new and fresh perspective to our team. As a recent bride myself, I also understand what is important to the bride and groom and their families and make sure all their hard work is seen through your photos. Also, because I do all the designing I know exactly what images and composition works best in albums.
